Modern society is characterized by abundance of information. Management of information can no longer be tackled by a layman neither can information be kept intact in libraries or archives. Never to be brought out for circulation and the attention of the users. Information is power only when it is exploited to the advantage or disadvantage of the mankind.
The range of information varies from a monograph to a concept, or a figure or even a small fact. In broad terms everybody needs information which include information on housing, health care, education, social welfare, private insurance savings, banks, investments, legal matters, sport, entertainment etc. The users of information now range from common man to scientists, planners and policy makers managers decision makers, lawyers and all professional groups, businessman, one and all.
This ever increasing importance of ‘Information has led to the growth of ‘Information Science’ as a discipline. According to Borke, an authority on the subject, Information Science is an interdisciplinary science that investigates the properties and behaviour of information, the forces that govern the flow and use of information, and the techniques, both manual and mechanical, of processing information for optional storage, retrieve and dissemination.
