National Institute of Miners’ Health

A number of health hazards like dust, poor illumination, noise, vibration & toxicants etc. exist in the mining environment.  These results in occupational lung diseases, noise induced hearing loss, hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), defective vision, musculoskeletal disorders and poisonings.  The National Institute of Miners’ Health undertakes studies  on these aspects and endeavours for safe mines and healthy miners through research & development in the field of occupational and environmental health.
The institute was registered in February 1990 as an autonomous society under Ministry of Mines, Government of India at Kolar in Karnataka.  Its central laboratory was shifted to Nagpur in July 2002.  The institute conducts basic and applied research in the field of occupational health and hygiene for subjects employed in mining and mineral based industry.
The pioneering work carried out over five decades in the field of occupational health and hygiene at the Medical Establishment and Dust Investigation unit of Bharat Gold Mines Limited, Kolar Gold Fields, formed the nucleus for research and development activities of the institute in the field of miners’ health.
