Private Universities are established by Act of Parliament or an Act of State Legislature. These private universities are regulated by the University Grants Commission (Establishment of and Maintenance of Standards in Private Universities) Regulations, 2003. Further, for the purpose of ascertaining the standards of teaching, examination and research of a University, the University Grants Commission (UGC) causes inspection of any department or departments. Finally, to assess the quality of University/Colleges, the UGC has established National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) under Section 12 (ccc) of the UGC Act 1956.
According to the University Grants Commission (UGC), the list of Private Universities approved by the Commission under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act 1956 during the last three years is annexed. There are five proposals of private universities pending approval with the Commission. However, there is no definite time-frame fixed for clearance of such proposals.
