At present, private universities are regulated by the University Grants Commission (Establishment of and Maintenance of Standards in Private Universities) Regulations, 2003.
However, in respect of the Deemed-to-be-Universities, the UGC has constituted an Expert Committee that has prepared draft UGC (Institutions Deemed-to-be-Universities) Regulations, 2008. Similarly, technical institutions are regulated by the “All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) Grant of approval for starting new technical institutions, introduction of courses or programmes and increase/ variation of intake capacity of seats for the courses or programmes and Extension of approval for the existing technical institutions Regulations, 2006”.
