At present, there are 145 private universities in the country. State-wise list is available at the University Grants Commission (UGC) website www.ugc.ac.in.
As per the data available with the UGC, there are 71 private universities which do not have a Hindi Department and 72 private universities which do not have a Sanskrit Department.
Universities have autonomy in academic matters, including opening new schools and departments, since they are governed in such matters by their Acts, Statutes, and Ordinances. The State Private Universities are set up by State Legislatures and therefore, the Central Government has no direct role to play in academic matters of these universities.
